ACTIVITIES
24 JUNE 09
On Monday, 22 June 2009 The Hidden Reverse Blog posted pictures I took of the Sun Ra house in January 2004. I remember being in Marshall Allen's bedroom where he pointed to a magical polaroid of Sun Ra sitting in front of the Sphinx in Egypt and then to a brilliant picture of the Arkestra from the Sixties and said, "No one in that picture is alive except me". I didn't dare puncture the intimacy of the moment with a camera flash so that image will just have to stay alive in my memory.
The sun is OUT in Glasgow. I love this city regardless of the weather but when it's like this there's no other place I'd rather be. We sat in a secluded spot with some friends at Kelvingrove Park having a BBQ and American microbrews and watched the sun go down over Glasgow University. A group of people were walking yellow tightropes tied among the trees to one side of us while a pack of neds had a dance off with no music deeper in the forest behind us. The polis as they call them here seemed to emerge from nowhere and descended on those chubby, fluorescent girls and bare-chested, pasty boys. Our theory is they let the ones go that provided the best patter and charged the boring ones. You could hear the neds call, "but it wasn't mine, it was boabies'!"
Still blasting David S. Ware and Takayanagi a ton. Itching for a free jazz blowout to hit Glasgow. I hear Ted Daniel might make an appearance sometime this year...
Jailbreak, my group with Chris Corsano, has an LP/DVD coming out on Family Vineyard sometime this year. More info on that as it develops...

Listening to the new Masayuki Takayanagi Archive 1 box set and it's incredible! It sounds like the most perfect music ever made to my ears. Also been listening to a lot of Grateful Dead live bootlegs that David has been downloading plus The Cramps, new David S. Ware 2xLP on NoBusiness Records, Stellar Om Source LP on Black Dirt, Richard Youngs Beyond The Valley Of Ultrahits, Kaa Antilope on Enfant Terrible, Onna CD, Mirrors LP, Brainbombs Fucking Mess LP, Bill Orcutt 7", Dead C Trapdoor Fucking Exit, J.D. Emmanuel Solid Dawn CD, Dave Bixby LP, BUFMS box set, Aliens, Psychos & Wild Things LP (Virginia Garage), Cold Sun, Jade Stone & Luv, Michael Hurley Armchair Boogie LP.
My amazing husband, David Keenan, has been regularly updating his Hidden Reverse blog and it's always an exciting read for me. Poignant, personal thoughts about modern culture, music, art, food, beer. Great pictures too! I'm always left dumbfounded: "That's exactly what I think but why can't I articulate it that way!". Beautiful.
Just finished reading The Game by Neil Strauss, he's a great writer and it's interesting to read a book written from such a male perspective but a lot of what he's saying in terms of will, happiness, confidence, sexuality crosses gender lines, an inspiring book and a fun read. I certainly get the sense that his writing about the PUA scene is much more interesting than the reality, but regardless of some of the cheeseballs in that scene (hey, the pics I've seen prove it), I definitely respect a lot of those involved taking control of their lives and really changing things for themselves. Drive. I think a lot of guys in the underground music scene could benefit from the chapters that emphasize the importance of hygiene (ahem), but fellas, if you're looking for some tips to attract ladies put this on your reading list pronto. Contrary to what Strauss says, I really don't think those lines would work on me, but the book transcends lines. Looking forward to reading his newest novel, Emergency, soon. Now reading Passages (thanks to William Bennett for the recommendation!).
Watching Storyville: Blindsight on BBC 4: A moving documentary about blind Tibetan teenagers attempting to climb the Lhakpa Ri in the Himayalas. Also watched a great Leonard Cohen documentary from the 80s on BBC 4, he obviously sleeps with his backup singers just like Dylan. Jealous. La Jetée by Chris Marker, I can't believe I only recently saw this film for the 1st time. Bruce Conner films. Drag Me To Hell. Looking forward to the Giallo weekend at the GFT unless it's hot and sunny, in which case I'll be camping in the Highlands.
My new favourite cafe in Glasgow is North Star (it's not new, but it's new to me). Hands down the best French toast I've had in the UK. No one can make American-style pancakes here. If you know of a place (besides my own homemade pancakes I sometimes make on Sunday mornings) please enlighten me. Crepes do not equal pancakes. Other regular Glasgow stops: The Cave, Lupe Pintos, Crabshakk (favourite restaurant in Glasgow!).
I've been painting a lot recently and recording as always. Fingers-crossed that all the releases I have planned for this year come to fruition.
